Reclaimed lane

The brief was to design a new kitchen for a Berlin atelier, replacing an existing one that no longer served the space. From the initial design stage, we set two premises: reuse as much of the existing kitchen as possible, and treat circularity as part of the concept itself, not an afterthought. The original cabinet modules were kept and rebuilt with new walnut fronts — carrying the existing kitchen forward instead of starting from zero. Solid walnut also forms a series of fixed vertical posts between the modules, doubling as the handles themselves — a small detail that gives the kitchen its particular character.

The countertop became the project's centrepiece. The aim was to buy no new material for it at all — so when the timber floor of an old bowling alley came up for sale, it felt less like a find than an opportunity. Turning a bowling lane into a kitchen countertop meant a long process of testing, treating, and reworking the material so it could take on this entirely different, everyday use.
