Muro e Porta grows out of the identity of Praza Porta do Sol in Vigo, where until the late nineteenth century stood one of the seven gates connecting the old walled city to the outside world. Like an exercise in archaeology, the wall re-emerges along its former trace — but rotated: overlaid onto the square's dominant east-west axis is a new wall running north-south, opening routes and perspectives that offer a new image of the city while reformulating the memory of what once stood there.

Where medieval walls were built to defend, Muro e Porta proposes instead a space of encounter and dialogue — rediscovering how the city's contemporary users relate to its identity and memory. That reflection carries into its materials: junco, a reed traditionally used by Galician shepherds and farmers to protect themselves from the rain, becomes an almost monumental exterior cladding, while the interior is lined with colourful PVC tarpaulin borrowed from agricultural industry — both materials relocated from their original function to acquire new use and meaning, and with it a new relationship between craft and industry.

To minimise its impact on the square's granite paving, the installation stands on a lightweight scaffolding structure — supports, platforms, trusses, and railings resting on the ground without any mechanical fixings. Muro e Porta works throughout in pairs of seemingly contradictory realities — the old layout and the contemporary city, the popular and the monumental, industry and craft, the natural and the artificial — revealing, in that dialectic, new possibilities for the square.
